April 30th.

By Katherine Buchanan

A one hour golf clinic was offered by the Discovery Bay Golf Club before our game on Thursday, April 30. It was conducted by the pro from Gig Harbor. The Port Townsend ladies were invited to the clinic and to play with us after the lesson. Discovery Bay ladies are invited by the Port Townsend ladies to a clinic in May on the short game. Port Townsend pro Mike Early will also be discussing some of the local rules.

Thursday's game was 2 Best Balls, 3-member teams The winning team was Marianne Ott, Katherine Buchanan and Lynn Pierle with a net score of 137. To play this game, each team member hits her own ball. Everyone keeps her score for each hole. The member's handicap for each hole is subtracted and the two lowest scores per hole for that team are added up. It was the best day for golf so far this year, warm and sunny.

May 2009

Lady Niners have a small but devoted group. Come out and enjoy some casual golf on Tuesday. The course has never been in better shape. Remember all tee times from now on are at 9:00.

May 7th

The competition for May 7 was a Scramble, so that we could finish the day early for lunch at Jalisco's. With three teams of three and a shotgun start, we ended the round in a record 4 hours! The team of Marianne Ott, Pat Burns, and Lynn Pierle finished with only 52.4 strokes net.  If that sounds too good to be true, we took the gross score and subtracted the average of the team's handicap. This was a winner-take all competition. The team of Ann Meier, Sheila Kilmer, and Diane Solie had a birdie on the 16th hole.

May 14th

The Discovery Bay Ladies Club had a full day of activities. The morning began with a group golf lesson given by Dan Swindler, the assistant pro at Gig Harbor. This was followed by a pitch and putt contest for additional warm up before going out for 18 holes of golf at 9:00 a.m. The pitch and putt contest was won by Sheila Kilmer with a total of 8 putts on a five hole design putting green. The lessons from Dan Swindler paid off for Sheila.
The day's play was Hidden Holes in which 6 blind draw holes were selected to be thrown out and players subtracted 2/3 of their course HCP for scoring. 1st place with 48 went to Lynn Pierle, 2nd with 49.8 was taken by Barb Aldrich and Edna Chicarell scored 53 for 3rd place. Diane Solie delighted her fellow players with an eighty-yard seven iron shot to the par 5 #18 hole which went into the cup. Congratulations, Diane! Discovery Bay has welcomed several new players to their club this season.

May 21st

The Ladies Golf Club at Discovery Bay played T's and F's on May 21. Sheila Kilmer played a great game and was first with a net 33, Edna Chicarell was right behind her with 34, Janet Nelson was third with 36, and Ann Meier was 4th with 38. Score was determined by counting strokes only for those holes that begin with a T or F, and then subtracting 1/2 the golfer's handicap.
Meier chipped in for a birdie on the eleventh hole. Chicarell chipped in on the tenth hole.
The group of Lynn Pierle, Chicarell, and Nelson all parred the fourteenth hole.

After golf, the ladies sat on the sunny deck overlooking the course. It was beautiful start to the Memorial Day weekend -- like being at a fancy golf resort in an exotic location.

June 4th

The Women's club played a tournament at Sunland.

June 11th

The Discovery Bay Ladies Golf Club enjoyed another beautiful weather day on the 18-hole course which is in excellent shape so early in the season. The morning began with a warm-up "Pitch and Putt" competition which is played with each participant chipping three balls to the practice green where the cup holes are numbered 1-5. The one ball closest to cup #1 is then putted around the 5 hole green. The lady with the fewest number of putts wins the competition and a small cash prize. Sheila Kilmer won the contest with a wonderful 25 foot putt across the green. The game of the day was "ONES" where holes beginning with the letters O, N, E, and S are counted up and 1/2 the player's HCP is subtracted for her total score. Tied for first with 32.5 points were Sheila Kilmer and Lynn Pierle, 3rd place was taken by Barb Aldrich with 33.5. In 4th and 5th places were Edna Chicarell and Irene Helander with 36.5 and 37.5. Following play the ladies had lunch at the newly opened Putter's Bay Cafe at the course and celebrated the birthdays of Pat Burns and Irene Helander.

June 18th

The competition was on the Net Score of Odd holes. Janet Nelson won first place with a net 35.5. Ann Meier was second with 37.5; Sheila Kilmer, third with 39.5; and Barbara Aldrich, fourth with 41.
The recent record-breaking warm weather in the Pacific Northwest gave the ladies another wonderful outing without significant rain.
Sheila Kilmer birdied the 16th hold with a 25 ft put, and Mary Pat Griswold birdied the 3rd hole with about a 35 foot put.
There were even a few joking comments about it might be getting too warm. However there were times when it seemed like the storm was coming in, but happily, it held off until after they completed their round.

June 25th

The Ladies at Discovery Bay Golf Club were able to "throw out any four holes". Sheila Kilmer was first with a net 50.5, Lynn Pierle was right behind Sheila with 51, Edna Chicarell was third with 56, while Ann Meier and Irene Helander tied for 4th with 56.5. The score was determined by eliminating the scores for four holes, and then subtracting 1/2 the golfer's handicap.

June 26th

Summer Mixer at Discovery Bay, a mixed-gender scramble.
On a warm, sunshine filled late afternoon and evening, The Discovery Bay Men's and Women's Clubs hosted a nine hole scramble followed by a barbecue at the course's new Putter's Bay Cafe. Forty two golfers of the two clubs with their guests teed off at 4:00 in teams of mixed gender and ages including families with children. Team handicaps were arrived at by adding all HCPs together and dividing by sixteen.
It was a glorious afternoon for this fun filled event, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. The clubs have promised to have another such event the end of the summer. Prizes and cash awards were presented for best team performances and competitions in KP and long drive.

In team competitions, the first place honor went to the Marc Hilt family of Marc, Molly, Jack and Allen with a team score of 25.9. Second place with a score of 26.6 went to the team of Pat Burns, Steve Burns, Sheila Kilmer, and Andy Kilmer. Third place was taken by the team of Walt Hill, Carol Hill, Gary Wolfe, and Greg Rutz with a score of 26.8. Congratulations to all these players whose ages ranged from 10 to 90. Incredible fun for families and friends.

The special hole competitions were KP's on the par 3 #2 and #3 holes. Mike Asmundson won on #2 with 10' 1 3/4"; Don Rogers won on #3 with 16'5".The ladies sadly missed the green on #2, but Ann Meier redeemed the women by landing 33' 3" from the pin on #3.The long drives on the par 5 #5 were won by Patti Sadick and Mike Asmundson.

Thanks are in order to captains Lynn Pierle and Clint Hurd for organizing and putting on the tournament. Also thanks to Dick Helander for scoring the event, Marc Hilt for setting up longest drive and KP's, and Michelle Sanchez, owner of Putters Bay Cafe, for a delicious after golf dinner.
