Discovery Bay – Port Townsend Ladies Golf Invitational

A light mist falling did not dampen the spirits of the women playing in the Ladies Invitational hosted by the Discovery Bay and Port Townsend Ladies Golf Clubs on Thursday, August 6, at the Discovery Bay Course.

“The goal here is to have fun and get to know ladies from the other clubs,” said Lynn Pierle, Captain of the Discovery Bay Club.

56 women from came from all over the peninsula to participate in the tourney, including players from Port Ludlow, Dungeness, Sunland, and Peninsula, as well as the Port Townsend clubs.

The competition of the day was a 9-hole Ambrose Scramble, and teams were purposely mixed with players from all clubs and all levels. Even with handicaps applied, there was a tie for first place and the winners were determined by a card off.

First place went to the team of Irene Helander (DB), Lindsay Busch (Dun), Jane Peoples (PT), and Bobbie Schaller (PT) with a net score of 26.6.

The team of Sheila Kilmer (PT), Carol Inglesby (Dun), Kathy Snider (PL), and Jo Hendrickson (Dun) took second place, also with a net score of 26.6.

Third place winners were Ann Meier (PT), Lori Purser (Dun), Donna Willenberg (Pen), and Ginny Hammond (Dun), with a net score of 28.3.

In addition, there were KP and Longest Drive competitions. Jo Hendrickson and Lindsay Busch won the Closest to the Hole contest on Hole #3 in their respective flights, and Lyn Gilbert and Virginia Dvorshak drove their balls the farthest on Hole #5.

The women enjoyed a continental breakfast to start the day, with dozens of pastries and breads prepared by the members of the host clubs.

By the time the competition ended, the sun peeked out, and the women were treated to a tasty luncheon of salads and sandwiches prepared by Putters Bay Café.

Door prizes of gift certificates, golf paraphernalia, wines, and table centerpieces added to the fun.

“A lot of people came together and worked hard to put on this tournament,” said Pierle. “I want to particularly thank Dick Helander and Ray Wenz for helping load carts for the ladies and the wonderful folks at Discovery Bay Golf Club for all of their support. We look forward to another great tournament next season.”
